Parasitic Helminths: New Perspectives in Biology and Infection

From 7 to 12 May 2025, in Hydra, Greece, a team from IBHI-Lab comprising: Dr Martin Gael Oyono (postdoctoral researcher), Mr Bernard Marie Bitye Zambo (PhD student) and Mr Elvis Leonel Kamguia Meyo (PhD student) had the opportunity to participate in the 17th edition of the Hydra Helminth conference, the most prestigious conference on parasitic helminths, on the theme: ‘Parasitic helminths: new perspectives in biology and infection’. During this 5-day conference, the IBHI-Team members showcased the latest findings of our laboratory through 3 poster presentations:
- The first poster, presented by Mr. Bernard Marie Bitye Zambo, was titled: “Mass Drug Administration of praziquantel Reduces the Susceptibility of School-Aged Children to Schistosoma mansoni Reinfection in Endemic Areas.”
- The second poster, presented by M. Elvis Leonel Kamguia Meyo, was titled: Reduced plasma levels of GM-CSF is a common feature of Schistosoma mansoni-infected from non-infected school-aged children in endemic areas.
- The third poster, presented by Dr Martin Gael Oyono, was titled: “Gut microbiome signature associated with Schistosoma mansoni infection and related liver pathology.”
These presentations underscore the significant contributions of the Immunobiology and Helminth Infections Laboratory to the monitoring and control of schistosomiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa broadly, and Cameroon in particular.
