Today, June 9, 2026, the Institute of Medical Research and Medicinal Plant Studies (IMPM) in Yaoundé hosted the official closing ceremony of the ground-breaking SRG-MERCK-IMPM project under the chairmanship of the Director General.
This milestone initiative brought together a distinguished international consortium: Professor Emile Rugamika Chimusa (Northumbria University, UK), Mr Irenee Donkam (CERA Group Haiti), Dr Miquel Duran Frigola and Dr Gemma Turon (cofounders of the Ersilia Open-Source Initiative), the Merck Schistosomiasis Research Grant Initiative, and IMPM, represented by Dr Nono Justin, Dr Yamthé Love and Mr Kamguia Leonel.
Key Achievements & Project Highlights
The primary mission of this project was the successful establishment of a state-of-the-art Data Science Hub at IMPM designed to strengthen local research capacity and deploy affordable, innovative strategies in the fight against Schistosomiasis.
The closing event featured comprehensive technical reporting across five key phases:
- Infrastructure: The physical and technical deployment of the new Data Science Hub Office, establishing a modern research environment at IMPM;
- Bioinformatics: Hands-on training in Multi-Omics Data Science and biomarker discovery, equipping researchers with cutting-edge analytical tools;
- Biostatistics: Advanced statistics tailored to biomarker mapping;
- Artificial Intelligence: Implementing Artificial intelligence/Machine Learning frameworks to accelerate targeted drug discovery;
- Tangible Outputs: Concrete, real-world research results achieved by program trainees, demonstrating the initiatives’s immediate scientific impact.
Looking Forward
As the project officially concludes, its legacy extends well beyond the training of experts. It has laid down the groundwork for the next two years, mapping a clear roadmap of future targets to ensure sustainable, data-driven solutions for public health in Cameroon and across the continent.
